In the past dentistry had only a few choices of materials available to restore chewing teeth. The need for a strong material required us to use gold or an alloy of silver and mercury called "Amalgam." These materials served us well for over 100 years. With time and wear the mercury in silver-mercury fillings leaks out and stains the teeth dark. The result is a weaker filling that fails and allows decay to start under the filling.

Today new materials are available that compare in strength to metal fillings and chemically bond to the tooth. Tooth colored fillings match the tooth's color, do not stain teeth dark, and are less likely to fracture your teeth.
